Reader Appreciation Day - Sept 30

readerappreciation

I really appreciate the readers that commented here the most:
This week three readers tied for the most comments. These same three readers have all been been featured here once before: Melli, .:mar, and J. Andrew Lockhart. I can't thank these guys enough. Comments provide more than half the content on this blog and these three bloggers are doing me the biggest favor by commenting here.

The one I drew

PSHunt
Tessa sleeping

This is an original chalk drawing by me. I drew this shortly after my cat, Tess, passed away. Like most cats she loved to nap in the sun. She and my other cat, Simon, were house cats. I blocked off the exit to the deck with a gate so they had an enclosed area to enjoy some fresh air. I always accompanied them out there though, they could escape if they really wanted too. I enjoyed many years of their companionship. I still see them in my dreams sometimes. They were really just wonderful.

Rock & Roll is for Dorks

My son has to record his three favorite songs onto a CD as an assignment for his 7th grade music class.

This assignment is causing much agida in our house. You see, he doesn't really listen to music on the radio so he isn't current with what's popular for teeny-boppers. So my husband and I suggested a couple songs we know he likes.

Me: How about YMCA?

Son: (Rolls eyes) It has to be one that they are singing now

Dad: How about the Chicken Dance?

Son: (Abruptly leaving the room) I'll handle this by myself.

I told my husband that we should have him listen to the radio station that plays all the pop music, but according to my son that is for girls, boys listen to rap. So my poor husband listened to a bunch of rap tunes on the Internet to see if there were any with family-friendly lyrics. He didn't find much. I suggested we look through our Cd's (mostly rock music) for something. According to my son only the dorks listen to rock & roll.

When did rock & roll stop being cool?

I know from reading all the results of the nerd tests last week that there are a bunch of cool and even uber-cool people out there. Help! What music is cool for 12-year-olds? Is rock & roll only for dorks? I need to know.

Some kind of writing meme...

gem1

I am part of The Unofficial Gale Martin Novel Writing Cheering Squad and we all got tagged with some kind of writing meme. Click the link to see the official rules and regulations, you know you'll scarcely ever see those on my blog. I'm not even sure I'm doing this correctly.

So anyhow, to cut to the meat of the matter, I have to write a title of a book and the opening sentence in a specific genre. I have to do this twice, picking two different genres. Here are the genres I can pick from:

Western, Science Fiction, Romance, Historical Fiction, Modern Contemporary Fiction, Mystery, Comedy, Horror.

For inspiration I can use this paragraph:

"It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents--except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness."

--Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, Paul Clifford (1830)

Oh yeah, it has to be atrocious, really atrocious.

1) Horror

"The Incredulous Creaking"

The wind howled ferociously through the cavernous old house. Every shutter creaked, because there was no WD40 sprayed on them, it creaked out the name, the venomous name. It creaked out the name all night, moaning it out loud so that every scepter in the area could hear it. The name was Squeaky.

2) Romance

"The Winds Whipped"

The darkness of the night exhilarated Rachella, the wind whipping the beautiful ringlets of her red hair against her face. The tempestuousness of the wind, was no match for the tempestuous nature of Rachella. Every bolt of lightning illuminated the man walking towards her, the man that was her destiny, the man that was her soul. Granite was a man who could withstand the storm, so he thought...

Okay, stop laughing, I do atrocious atrociously.

Reader Appreciation Day - Sept 23

readerappreciation

I really appreciate the reader that commented here the most:
JAndrew

I don't know how I found Andrew's poetry blog, I'm just glad I did. He is the most amazing poet and I've sat on the sidelines watching the accolades for his work grow. He has a loyal legion of readers who never seem to miss any post he writes.

Andrew has the most amazing ability to start down a path with a poem, and in the middle of the poem change directions, yet the poem remains cohesive. He achieves this in the space of a 3 line haiku or 5 line tanka. His poems are quite frankly, beautiful.

Soon Andrew will enjoy an even wider audience, his book, "Tangled in Wisteria" will hit bookstores soon. I'm going to be first in line.

Webolo Conference Call

phoneMy 12 year old son is a boy scout and recently signed on to become a den chief for a den of cub scouts. What this means is that he will join their meetings (in addition to his own troop meetings) and help the young cub scouts transition to becoming boy scouts. He is to be a role model, help teach the boy scout law and oath, and generally assist the den leaders.

The first cub scout meeting was last night and my son had to miss it because he is on a class trip. He was unhappy to find out that he would miss the first meeting with the cub scouts. He takes all his responsibilities so seriously, and then he came up with a plan!

He wanted one of his parents to go to the cub scout meeting. He would call our cell phone and we would put the phone on speaker phone and he could speak to all the scouts.

I think he has seen his parents on too many conference calls for work. You've gotta love the work ethic though. He's quite a boy.

The Bet - An Update

yankees
So I have a bet with Suldog and Stu. I bet Suldog that the Yankees would have a better year than the Red Sox, the loser has to put the other team's logo on top of their sidebar for a week. I bet Stu the same thing, only he spotted me 4 games because the Yankees were 4 games back at the time of the bet. Stu asked me to put a GNMParents logo at the top of my sidebar if I lost the bet.
Lucky for me the Yankees are mounting an historic comeback from a 12 & 1/2 game deficit and are now just 1 & 1/2 games out from winning their division.

Baseball is so much fun! Thank you so much for reading this.

Missing him

cry
My son is away on a school trip, he left early Monday morning, he won't be home till late Thursday night. I won't see or talk to him till them. He is way up in Canada somewhere, 5 hours by bus. It's a school tradition to have the seventh grade class do this team building trip. They are actually camping, in this cold weather. The kids are busy learning each other's strengths and weaknesses, I'm busy worrying that he is eating well enough and wondering whether his feet are warm.

Some of the parents who have gone through this before say it is really a positive experience for the kids. Some of the kids have never been camping before and they are expecting a resort at the end of their bus trip. What they find instead is a dock, in the middle of nowhere, with three boats. One boat takes all their luggage and their teachers over to the island. The other two boats, which are canoes, take the kids, 15 to a canoe, to the island. The island is a 20 minute canoe ride away, some kid powered canoes take 2 1/2 hours to make it there. That is their first lesson in teamwork.

They are then broken into 3 groups and will spend the rest of their time on the island together with their group. Two days are spent on different team building activities, one day is spent back at camp doing the cooking and cleaning for the other two groups of kids.

So he is gone, busy with his classmates. There is a big void around the house. No homework getting worked on, no cartoons blaring from the TV, no child like laughter and exuberance. It is just my husband and I. We quickly fell back into old habits abandoned when we became parents. Tonight we sat down on the couch and watched the Yankees. Without parental duties to perform we just relaxed and watched the ball game. The three of us have watched games together, but much of the conversation is directed at our son, teaching him the intricacies of baseball. We explain why the outfield is brought in for certain batters, when it's a good idea to bunt, what the infield fly rule is or whatever. We'll also teach him about Yankee history, about the players we watched growing up, some of the great games we went to. Tonight was different, we just watched and talked without having to answer questions about the rules. I recalled my husband and I planning to follow the Yankees around the country when we retire, getting to every major league ballpark at least once. I haven't thought about that in a very long time.

Yankee Stadium

So our son is getting to the age where we are thinking about the family vacations we should take before he leaves for parts unknown, for longer than four days. My husband nor I have ever been to a World Series game. The Yankees will likely make the play offs this season, and if they make the Series we are going to try to get tickets to at least one of the games at Yankee Stadium. That would be awesome for the three of us to experience our first World Series game together. We need to capitalize on an opportunity to do this as a family, because we won't always be all together.

What happens when you procrastinate...

All you nice bloggers tag me and share the linky love. I do appreciate that. I do one of two things when tagged:
1) Answer the tag right away
2) Answer the tag long after you've forgotten that you tagged me

My apologies to those who have waited a long, long time.
sorry

I am going to try to answer every open tag in this one blog post. I'll try to be brief. Oh yeah, I rarely follow the directions for the tag, I have authority issues.

Recently (9/10) Jennifer tagged me with this 5 answers meme:
What were you doing 10 years ago? I worked at a small telephone company, I was busy with my two year old son, the rest is a blur.
What were you doing 1 year ago? working, parenting, blogging, watching falcons, reading
What are 5 snacks that you enjoy? peanut butter cookies, caramel, peppermint patties, animal crackers, popcorn
What are 5 songs you know the lyrics to? I Will Survive, White Flag, Feeling Groovy, Friends in Low Places, The First Cut is the Deepest
What are 5 things you would do if you were a Millionaire? Buy a house for my Mom, and houses for 3 of my sisters, and a new luxury car for the other sister.
What are five bad habits? Not answering tags in a timely matter, getting behind on laundry, staying up too late, not watching enough Yankee Baseball, singing
What 5 things you like to do? Hang out with my son, watch Yankee Baseball, watch birds, photograph birds, sing
What are your 5 favorite toys? Computer, camera, palm pilot, phone , PS2
What are 5 things you would never wear? spiked heels, fur coat, army boots, large plaid pattern, feather boa.
What are 5 things that you hate to do? laundry, mow the lawn, be outside in winter, drive in snow, be in crowded places
On 9/2 Melli tagged me with this marriage meme. My answers are intentionally vague because my husband said that as far as my blog is concerned I don't have a husband:
Where did you meet your husband? At work
What was the first thing you said to your husband? I have no idea
Where was the first kiss? first date? At home, out
Did you have a long or short courtship/engagement? long
Where did you get engaged? At home
Where did you get married? His hometown
How did the reception go? Great
How was the honeymoon? Great

On July 6th Mary tagged me with blogging 8 random facts:
I love the Yankees, my shoe size is 6 1/2, my favorite color is yellow, I like to feed birds at my bird feeder, I'm in a book club, I rarely follow the rules for a meme, I love summer, I hate winter.

On June 20th Gem awarded me a Rockin'Girl Blogger award.

Why do you do this?

frustrationWhen you leave a comment on my blog I am notified via email about your comment, this allows me to easily reply to your comment via email, especially if you've asked me a question.
Sometimes I am blocked from responding because the email address is:

noreply-comment@blogger.com

If this happens I can:
1) Look up your email address if I already have it.
2) I can go to your site and see if you've posted your email address out there.
3) I can try to answer the comment in my comments section, except that very few people go back to check the comments section so I feel like I'm wasting my time doing that.
4) I can go to your comments section and respond. I don't like this option because invariably there is some touching, poignant post there and I don't feel like commenting about something out of context.
5) Skip replying and move on to the next comment.

Because I often do things like I am in a rush, whether I am in a rush or not, I will almost always choose option number 5, skip replying and move on to the next comment.

You can change all this by putting your email in your Blogger profile. Go to your Blogger Dashboard and click on "Edit Profile". Check the box nest to "Show my email address". What this will do is add your email address as a link to your profile when someone views it, and send your email address along with your comments when you put a comment on a blogger blog.

email If you are a blogger who enjoys the blogging community and you don't have your email address in your profile, you are cutting yourself off from some email interaction with other bloggers. Some of my best blogging buddies became my best blogging buddies through email, not through my comments section. I don't think I'm alone on this. If you have privacy concerns create an email address just for receiving blog comments. Go to your Blogger settings, click on the Comments tab. Way down at the bottom of the page fill in the email address where you would like comment notifications to go, where it says "Comment Notification Address". You will start enjoying more interaction with the bloggers on the blogs you comment on.

If you already have your email in your profile, help me out here, tell the noreply-comment@blogger.com bloggers what they are missing out on. Thank you.

We've been Simpsonized!

simpsonize Here's me and my son, we've been Simpsonized! Did you know the Simpsons debuted back in 1989? I watched it semi-regularly for a season or two back then. Now it's making another grand debut into my life.

My son was flush with birthday money. He very carefully researched buying a new video gaming system. Since the Wii came out, used Gamecubes are flooding the market. One Sunday afternoon I ended up taking him to four different GameStop locations. He bought a used Gamecube for $40, and a used Simpson's Road Rage game for $25. Having learned all the characters from the video game he wanted to watch the show. So we gave it a try.

It's hardly changed at all, it has the same old familiar opening scenes and the family is still together. Now my son and I are together in Springfield, Simpsonized!

1) Add the code for the button
2) Copy the button code and paste it right below where you copied it from
3) Put the textarea tags before and after the code you pasted.

Below is the actual code I used to make the button and box at the top of this post. I used the optional rows and cols attributes to specify how tall and wide I wanted the textarea box to be. Voila!

Are you ready to change my daemon?

You HAVE to help me out here. I was visiting over at See Suzy Spin and she had her daemon posted. I don't know exactly what a daemon is, but the website I created this on is really beautiful.

I answered 20 questions, then they told me that my daemon was Olin the crow. I'm glad my daemon is a bird, but there are other birds I would rather be! This is where YOU come in. YOU can help change my daemon. They have my input, and if I can get YOU to add yours it will be more accurate and my daemon will probably change. Here's what the email they sent me said:

You have completed your personality profile and selected an initial Dæmon form. Before your Dæmon form is fixed make sure it is a true representation of your inner-self. Get the people who know you best, your friends, to help. You only have 12 days before it is fixed.

Embed the following code to put a mini questionnaire on your blog or myspace. Your friends can comment there and make sure your Dæmon is a representation of the real you.
Apparently there is a movie:

''The Golden Compass'' is an exciting fantasy adventure film, set in a parallel world where people's souls manifest themselves as small animals, talking bears fight wars, and children are mysteriously disappearing. At the centre of the story is a 12-year-old girl, Lyra, who sets out to find and rescue her best friend, Roger, and ends up on an extraordinary quest to save not only her own world, but ours as well.

Please help me change from a crow! I hope you don't change me into something worse!

Change me here!

Chichimama has one too!

Isn't this nameplate beautiful? Friday made it for me. She had some lovely things to say about me too. Thank you Friday, you're the greatest.

Jennifer named my site Blog of the Day over at The Life of a School Bus Driver. What a nice blogger!

David over at Sugarloaf Mountain has a new lease on life and needed a new blog design to go along with it. I gave him a hand and upgraded him to a blogger beta template and then I tweaked it a little so he could have the colors he wanted. Go take a look! He's such a nice blogger, who wouldn't want to help him out? He's having a house warming party at his site all weekend, go bring him a gift!

Then there is Stu:
