Some of you may know that I'm a Yankees fan, I don't blog about it too often but the posts I have written can pretty much attest to the fact that I wear pin striped underwear. The Yankee game is on the TV as I'm typing this post.
One of the first posts I wrote as a brand new blogger was about how my knowledge of Yankee lore sealed the deal for my husband while we were dating. Read about it in my post titled:
Thurmon Munson Gives a Sign.
Another notable Yankees post is from this spring when we traveled to New York City to see a Yankees game. Our son had never been to Yankee Stadium and they will be tearing it down soon. We wanted to make sure he saw a game at Yankee stadium so he could pass down the memories to his great grandchildren some day. We did a stadium tour, went to monument park and ate at Mickey Mantle's restaurant. It was great. You can read about it here:
Yankee Stadium. We were just talking today about going to NYC when the Yankees are in their new stadium so we can get a look at it. It's so nice that the Yankees are a family affair here.
Out here in western NY the level of Yankee fanaticism is tame compared to what I experienced when I lived and worked in NJ for three years. Living close to NYC there were many more Yankee fans around, and many more Mets fans. The rivalry between the fans is fierce and intense. I got sucked in big time. I was hanging up the standings outside my office everyday, I always included a little piece of Yankee trivia about which Yankee held what record. Since the Yankees have a long winning tradition I had many statistics to chose from. I had a blast as a Yankees fan living near NY.

My favorite all time Yankee player is Don Mattingly. I remember telling one of my coworkers how much I admired him and she said, "Yeah, I think he's cute too." I could tell she wasn't a baseball fan, what does cute have to do with playing baseball? Didn't she know that Don Mattingly was a Golden Glove winner, that he was the AL MVP in 1985? Donnie Baseball was a class act and a great player, regardless of whether he was cute or not. His playing ability and sportsmanship is what I admired about him. He went on to win 9 Golden Gloves.
Motherhood impeded my ability to watch every Yankee game and my priorities shifted a little. I didn't follow them as closely, but I never stopped loving the Yankees. Just like when your kids grow up and leave home you may not see them every day, but you still love them.
Even though there were plenty of Mets fans to torment in NY the real rivalry is between the Yankees and the Red Sox.
Wikipedia explains it well. Here's what they have to say:
The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is one of the longest and most bitter rivalries in professional sports. For over 100 years, baseball's New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox of the American League have been chief rivals, compounded by their geographic proximity.
Since the inception of the wild card team and an added Division Series, the American League East rivals have squared off in the American League Championship Series three times, the Yankees winning twice in 1999 and 2003, and the Sox winning once in 2004. In addition, the teams have met in the last regular season series of a season to decide the title, in 1904 (where the Red Sox won), 1949 (where the Yankees won). The teams also finished tied for first in 1978, when the Yankees won a high-profile one-game playoff for the division title.
Since the Red Sox' defeat of the Yankees in seven games in the 2004 American League Championship Series, the rivalry has become more intense than ever before.[1] USA Today has dubbed it "the fiercest rivalry in sports."[2]
You can read much more about the rivalry at
Wikipedia, but it seems evident that Yankee fans and Red Sox fans don't like each other very much.
I became a fan of
Suldog's blog about a year ago. He's a good writer and seems like an all round nice guy despite the stain of being a Red Sox fan. He wrote a
post the other day that included a little baseball quiz about the Red Sox. The Yankees fan in me couldn't help but put a little dig into my comment on that post, a very mild dig because of my great respect for Suldog. Suldog, being the Red Sox fan that he is couldn't let that lie and wanted to know if I would be interested in a wager. So, if the Yankees have a better season than the Red Sox Suldog will display a Yankees logo on his blog right at the top of his blog's sidebar. If the Red Sox have a better season I will display the Red Sox logo at the top of my sidebar for a week. The thought of putting a Red Sox logo on my sidebar kind of sickens me. I'm sure Suldog feels even worse about putting a Yankees logo up because of the bitterness of the years of defeat the Sox suffered at the hands of the Yankees.
Then Suldog's friend
Stu, who is also a Red Sox fan, who I've never met before, challenged me to put a
GNMP logo on my blog for a month and he will put the Yankees logo on his blog based on the outcome of the Yankees and Red Sox . Stu also spotted me four games since the Sox were ahead by four games in the standings. Since GMMP is a blog about parenthood I won't mind putting up a logo to that site, but I still don't want to lose the bet. I put a widget in my sidebar that tracks the MLB standings so I can watch the Yankees climb in the standings.
The Yanks have now moved to 5 games back and they are losing the game they are playing right now by 5 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. I'm not worried yet. There's plenty of season left and the Yankees know how to win.
Sorry for the long length of this post, much longer than my usual posts, it must be the curse of the Suldog-ino.
