Friday's Child

Friday

Friday has a colorful blog, so she is best represented by a colorful nameplate.

Friday is an inspirational blogger. She likes to post about how to live a happy and fulfilling life. She also likes to have fun on her blog, many posts are decorated with animated clip-art.

Friday also loves posting about her grandchildren, they are never far from her mind. She is so friendly and social, it always feels like a party when you visit there. She is a wonderful friend and truly enjoys blogging.

I chose five charms for Friday:

1) A bird because she loves birds. She saves some of the bird photos I post for her personal collection. That just makes me smile.
2) A Philippine flag because that is where she lives
3) A heart because she loves her readers
4) A keyboard because she likes to play the organ
5) A computer because she loves to blog

Okay Friday, now you have to make eight nameplates, I can't wait to see them.

Daisy

Daisy

Daisy is one of the kindest, most charming and friendliest women in the blogosphere. She has a magnetic personality that attracts a legion of bloggers to the daisy patch to read her words of wisdom and inspiration each day.

She's a southerner with more graciousness than one person should be allowed to have. She and her husband, Mr. Wonderful, successfully raised 3 children, 2 girls and a boy, who are now grown and living up north. One of Daisy's daughters has a baby girl named Emma. Daisy's sun rises and sets with her little grand daughter, I think Mr. Wonderful's does too.

Daisy raised her family in Savannah and has many happy memories and good friends there. She followed her minister husband to Virginia where she now tends to her daisy patch and blog friends. She has such a big heart and she receives so much admiration from her friends. I consider her one of my best friends and I've never even met her. Truly extraordinary.

Several of Daisy's friends participated in the nameplate meme and created a nameplate for her, and she made 7 nameplates for her friends and one for her daughter . Now I'm supposed to make 8 nameplates. I finished Daisy's and now there are only 7 more to go. I'll have to get to those one by one. My creative juices flow much more slowly than your average blogger's.

Yankees vs. Red Sox Series

yankeesThe Yankees and Red Sox are going head to head this Tuesday through Thursday at Yankee stadium.

The Yankees are currently 8 games back and losing pretty bad to the Tigers right now.

You can take a poll and see who most people think will win this series over at coolstandings.com. If I'm going to win the bet with Suldog and Stu I better hope the Yankees win a wildcard spot in the playoffs.

I've been finding out what teams the readers here root for:

Yankees: mon@rch , Patricia, Brillig

Red Sox: Suldog, Stu, Mr. Fabulous, LadyBugCrossing, Uisce

Cardinals: J. Andrew Lockhart, David's mother, DeeJay, Jan

Orioles: Melli

Cubs: Killired and her mother

I didn't know there were that many Cards fans!

A strange confluence

There are some big projects at work, my boss's boss got moved to work on one of them. They have moved a new guy into his position. I had a meeting with him the other day.

Karin always posts a great Sunday edition of her blog where she shares lots of links, she calls it Surfer Sunday.

The hamster stories on my blog are popular with the search engines. There is one story, Hamster Dilemma, where I wrote about taking my son's hamster to the veterinarian. A couple of month's ago a woman who writes for Business Week sent me an email. She was writing a story on people who will spend money on veterinary care for small animals. She found my post about taking the hamster to the vet and was wondering if I would be willing to be interviewed. I sent her my phone number and she called me. She said that the story would run in a few weeks, she would send me an email to let me know it was published. I never did see an email from her, but I could have deleted it as spam or missed it altogether.

Last week Karin published Surfer Sunday 31, and she included a link to a people finder site called Pipl. Since Karin always provides top quality links, I clicked over to Pipl and typed in my name. One of the links that came up in that search was a Business Week article called The Pet Economy. The pet story was published after all.

The Pet Economy

I've been working for a very long time and have never been interviewed by any magazine, but because I took a hamster to the vet I got my name in Business Week. The world is a funny place some times.

I had my first meeting with my boss's boss the other day. When I entered his office the first thing he said was, "Have you brought any hamsters to the vet lately?" That question took me a little off-guard.

Happy Bus
My next door neighbors have a lovely daughter, she gets good grades, she has a most pleasant personality and she's pretty too. Her junior prom was last April. Her Mom stopped over to chat and was telling us a story about how it came to be that they couldn't get a limo for the prom. I don't remember why they couldn't find a limo, but I do remember that they got something even better for their daughter and her friends to go to the prom in: The Happy Bus! We asked what time the Happy Bus was going to arrive, it was right when my son was going to be at a baseball game. He made me promise to take a picture of it, so I did.
Baseball
Here's a picture of my son at the game with his Grampie. I don't think they could see the Happy Bus from there, even with binoculars. You can't tell from the picture but they are both wearing Yankees caps.

Speaking of the Yankees, they are 5.5 games behind the Red Sox at press time. I'm getting a little anxious about it because of the bet. I definitely don't want to be sporting a Red Sox logo on this blog.

Speaking of happy, I am so happy that people are using the next button. I have more testimonials to post!

The next button, it's that good.

TThe other day I told you about the next button I put on my blog. I'm writing about it again because it is the greatest thing. If just one person decides to use it as a result of me reposting about it I will be happy. I know I will have saved that person tons of time.

Let me start with the testimonials:

Renee: btw: thanks for my Next button!

Jean-Luc Picard: I'm trying that 'next' in Google Reader, and like you say, it's a real time-saver.

LadyBugCrossing : This is great! Thanks for the tip!
I put that little gem right up there and I'm ready to click!

Here is some more information on the next button, I've provided some in depth info in case you are unfamiliar with any of these tools:
1) It is not part of your blogger blog
2) It is something you put on the command bar, the area at the top of your screen when you open Internet Explorer.
3) The next button will go in your links toolbar in IE7, make sure you have the Links tool bar checked. Right click on the gray area at the top of your browser window, you'll be able to see what toolbars you have visible. (I think it's called bookmark toolbar in FireFox.) Check the links toolbar if it's not checked already.
links
Here's a tutorial on how to use the links toolbar. Basically you just drag your links to the toolbar and voila, there they are, ready to click.
4) You have to have your favorite reads in Google Reader. Here is a tutorial on setting up Google Reader.
5) Make sure you sort your feeds in the order you want to read them.
Google Reader
I have mine sorted by newest, that way everyone is so impressed when I'm the first to comment on their latest blog post.
6) To add the next button go to your Google Reader home page, click on the link near the bottom left that says "Manage subscriptions >>". On the next screen, near the top left click the link that says "Goodies". On the next screen read the part under the heading that says "Put Reader in a bookmark".
google Reader2
Click the picture to see larger version
See that little yellow next button? You just drag it to your Links toolbar, then it's installed, honest!
7) Once it's in your toolbar, you click on it. It brings you directly to the post you want to read, it doesn't bring you to their RSS feed, it brings you to their blog, to the post page. On some blogs the comment area is already open waiting for your comment, on others you have to click to open their comment area. You leave your comment if you are so inclined and then ....
8) Hit the next button again! You are brought straight to the next blog according to the sort order you specified in Google Reader. You don't need to go back to a reader to find the next blog, you don't need to click to get out of the browser, nothing. It's like the easy button for blog surfing. Take the plunge!

The next best thing in blogging

In February I told you about how I started using Google Reader to keep up on my blog reading. Some of you decided to switch too, I know this because I started to get a lot more traffic to my blog from Google Reader. Guess what, they just made it even better.

I was reading the Google Reader Blog and found this super time saving tip. Whenever I want to read my favorite blogs I click the "next" link that is up in my link bar at the top of the screen. I am brought directly to the most recently updated blog that I read through Google Reader. When I get done commenting I hit the "next" link again and go directly to the next blog. I don't have to backtrack back to Google Reader or close out my browser, all I have to do is hit the "next" button and it brings me directly to the post, ready to accept my comment. The number of clicks I have to make to read blogs has gone down dramatically. It is such a time saver.

If you already use Google Reader it is so easy to set up the "next" button on your link bar. On your Google Reader home page click on the link near the bottom left that says "Manage subscriptions >>". On the next screen, near the top left click the link that says "Goodies". On the next screen read the part under the heading that says "Put Reader in a bookmark". The instructions are really simple and take about 10 seconds to complete. I have saved so much time in the week or so since I've had the "next" button. Haven't you noticed me at your blog commenting in a more timely way?

I'm kinda obsessed with baseball ever since the bet with Suldog and Stu. The Yankees just won tonight, and the Red Sox won too.

The bet

Some of you may know that I'm a Yankees fan, I don't blog about it too often but the posts I have written can pretty much attest to the fact that I wear pin striped underwear. The Yankee game is on the TV as I'm typing this post.

One of the first posts I wrote as a brand new blogger was about how my knowledge of Yankee lore sealed the deal for my husband while we were dating. Read about it in my post titled: Thurmon Munson Gives a Sign.

Another notable Yankees post is from this spring when we traveled to New York City to see a Yankees game. Our son had never been to Yankee Stadium and they will be tearing it down soon. We wanted to make sure he saw a game at Yankee stadium so he could pass down the memories to his great grandchildren some day. We did a stadium tour, went to monument park and ate at Mickey Mantle's restaurant. It was great. You can read about it here: Yankee Stadium. We were just talking today about going to NYC when the Yankees are in their new stadium so we can get a look at it. It's so nice that the Yankees are a family affair here.

Out here in western NY the level of Yankee fanaticism is tame compared to what I experienced when I lived and worked in NJ for three years. Living close to NYC there were many more Yankee fans around, and many more Mets fans. The rivalry between the fans is fierce and intense. I got sucked in big time. I was hanging up the standings outside my office everyday, I always included a little piece of Yankee trivia about which Yankee held what record. Since the Yankees have a long winning tradition I had many statistics to chose from. I had a blast as a Yankees fan living near NY.

My favorite all time Yankee player is Don Mattingly. I remember telling one of my coworkers how much I admired him and she said, "Yeah, I think he's cute too." I could tell she wasn't a baseball fan, what does cute have to do with playing baseball? Didn't she know that Don Mattingly was a Golden Glove winner, that he was the AL MVP in 1985? Donnie Baseball was a class act and a great player, regardless of whether he was cute or not. His playing ability and sportsmanship is what I admired about him. He went on to win 9 Golden Gloves.

Motherhood impeded my ability to watch every Yankee game and my priorities shifted a little. I didn't follow them as closely, but I never stopped loving the Yankees. Just like when your kids grow up and leave home you may not see them every day, but you still love them.

Even though there were plenty of Mets fans to torment in NY the real rivalry is between the Yankees and the Red Sox. Wikipedia explains it well. Here's what they have to say:

The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is one of the longest and most bitter rivalries in professional sports. For over 100 years, baseball's New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox of the American League have been chief rivals, compounded by their geographic proximity.

Since the inception of the wild card team and an added Division Series, the American League East rivals have squared off in the American League Championship Series three times, the Yankees winning twice in 1999 and 2003, and the Sox winning once in 2004. In addition, the teams have met in the last regular season series of a season to decide the title, in 1904 (where the Red Sox won), 1949 (where the Yankees won). The teams also finished tied for first in 1978, when the Yankees won a high-profile one-game playoff for the division title.

Since the Red Sox' defeat of the Yankees in seven games in the 2004 American League Championship Series, the rivalry has become more intense than ever before.[1] USA Today has dubbed it "the fiercest rivalry in sports."[2]

You can read much more about the rivalry at Wikipedia, but it seems evident that Yankee fans and Red Sox fans don't like each other very much.

I became a fan of Suldog's blog about a year ago. He's a good writer and seems like an all round nice guy despite the stain of being a Red Sox fan. He wrote a post the other day that included a little baseball quiz about the Red Sox. The Yankees fan in me couldn't help but put a little dig into my comment on that post, a very mild dig because of my great respect for Suldog. Suldog, being the Red Sox fan that he is couldn't let that lie and wanted to know if I would be interested in a wager. So, if the Yankees have a better season than the Red Sox Suldog will display a Yankees logo on his blog right at the top of his blog's sidebar. If the Red Sox have a better season I will display the Red Sox logo at the top of my sidebar for a week. The thought of putting a Red Sox logo on my sidebar kind of sickens me. I'm sure Suldog feels even worse about putting a Yankees logo up because of the bitterness of the years of defeat the Sox suffered at the hands of the Yankees.

Then Suldog's friend Stu, who is also a Red Sox fan, who I've never met before, challenged me to put a GNMP logo on my blog for a month and he will put the Yankees logo on his blog based on the outcome of the Yankees and Red Sox . Stu also spotted me four games since the Sox were ahead by four games in the standings. Since GMMP is a blog about parenthood I won't mind putting up a logo to that site, but I still don't want to lose the bet. I put a widget in my sidebar that tracks the MLB standings so I can watch the Yankees climb in the standings.

The Yanks have now moved to 5 games back and they are losing the game they are playing right now by 5 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. I'm not worried yet. There's plenty of season left and the Yankees know how to win.

Sorry for the long length of this post, much longer than my usual posts, it must be the curse of the Suldog-ino.

My Awesome Son

A

Here are some words that start with A that remind me of my son:
Brian 2
Atlas - He loves to read them. He keeps them by his bed to peruse before dropping off to sleep.

He is the apple of my eye.

ArthurPortait One of his favorite TV programs when he was younger was Arthur. We taped nearly every episode so that he could watch it on demand.

He's always telling me that I have Triple A - Arthritis, Alzheimer's and I forget the other one.

He tries to make me roll my eyes by saying "Am in I" instead of "Aren't I" because he knows I like him to use language appropriately.

He absolutely abhors being absent from school.

I find him very amusing to talk to, he's so funny.

When he was first learning to talk he would sometimes drop the beginning consonant on words. To this day we continue to ask him if he wants any apes when offering him grapes.

I'll never think of asparagus in the same way again.

He aspires to be someone grand when he grows up. I think the wait is already over.

Automobiles - he was born loving them.

He is always ready to assist you. I can't remember a time when I've asked him to help me with something that he didn't do it. He's wonderful like that.

He is such a wonderful asset to our family.

Genesee Country Village & Museum
Yesterday I posted about my son's summer camp experience as an apprentice to several tradesmen at the Genesee Country Village & Museum. He made several things during his week as an apprentice. Melli suggested I line them up in a row and use them for today's photohunt theme. Thanks Melli! Visit Melli's photohunt here.

1) He made an S-hook at the blacksmith's shop.
2) He made an ornament at the tinsmith's shop.
3) He made a pot scrubber at the broom maker's shop.
4) He made a flyer on with a printing press at the printer's.
5) He made a bucket at the cooper's.

He also made a piece of pottery at the potter's but it still has to be fired and dried, so we'll pick that up in a few weeks.

He had a very productive week! photohunt information

Some people have all the fun

Genesee Country Museum
My son gets to go to some really cool summer camps. I often envy all the learning he does through out the summer. I would have loved to go to some of these camps when I was a kid, like the one he went to this week at the Genesee Country Village & Museum. Here's the description:

Trades of the 19th Century Did you ever wonder what it would be like to be an apprentice and learn a trade at the side of a master craftsman? What trade would you choose? Apprentices will spend time with at least four of the following tradesmen: the blacksmith, the tinsmith, the printer, the broommaker, the cooper or the potter. At the end of the week, you’ll be able show what you have learned and decide your favorite.

He went to visit every one of the tradesmen, and he made something at each one and now all his creations are on the kitchen counter awaiting permanent homes.

On the first day of camp he traded in his regular clothes for some period clothing. This was his uniform for the entire week. He was very concerned that someone in our neighborhood might get a glimpse of him in his old time clothing and wonder what is wrong with his fashion sense, but luckily that didn't happen. He and the other campers became part of the museum exhibits as they played and worked in their period costumes. They even gave him a cloth lunch bag. We wrapped his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in wax paper because there weren't any baggies back then.

He had a great time at this camp and is looking forward to returning next summer.

Assignment: Make a thing that would raid your refrigerator at night.

When my son got this assignment in art class this spring, this was his creation. I've been waiting for an appropriate Photo Hunt to share this with all of you, hoping you would find it as amusing as I did. Here's a description in my son's words:

His name is Fred and he's a refrigerator raider.
He has one eye, that's the thing on his head.
The nose is right under the eye, it's a little smaller.
The thing on its head is a fez. A fez is a little hat.
Its mouth and its arm are connected, it's the thing sticking out from its body. It's more like a vacuum for sucking in food.
The two little things on the side are its legs. It hops back and forth on them.
