I will film the falcons if I want to (and you can't stop me)
It was prime fledge watch season, the Kodak falcons had fledged and they were branching out a little, using air space on the side of town where I worked. I parked my car on the top of the parking garage and looked up, jack pot! The juvies (juvenile peregrine falcons) were in the air around the buildings near my parking garage. I got out my trusty digital camcorder and started shooting the wonderful sight.
Then, Mr. Nineteen-Year-Old-Security-Guard (Mr. NYOSG) from the parking garage walks over to me.
Mr. NYOSG: Can I ask you not to take pictures for security reasons?
Me: I'm taking pictures of birds. (Still filming)
Mr. NYOSG: The companies around here don't want people taking pictures of their buildings.
Me: I'm taking pictures of those birds. Look at them, they are right there. I pointed to the juvies who started to make an extra loud ruckus. (Still filming)
Mr. NYOSG: You aren't going to sell pictures of these buildings to any magazines are you? (So that's the security concern?)
Me: No. (Still filming)
Mr. NYOSG: Okay, but don't do it for long.
Well, I certainly felt like my rights were being infringed upon, and you know what, they were. Photographers have rights. I didn't stop filming and took my time photographing the birds. I'm not easily pushed around. Even though Mr. NYOSG backed off it was a good thing, I wasn't going to. I can take pictures of birds in the air. I can't help it some corporations put their buildings right in the way. I don't like them trying to intimidate me into relinquishing my rights.
