In the car this morning...

I was driving my 11 year old son to school this morning. We were listening to the radio.

Radio:...Rosenblum said soldiers increasingly have been leaving sperm samples, or explicit instructions on post-mortem extraction, before heading to battle.

Me thinking: Okay, just act cool, he understood that.

Son: What's sperm?

Me thinking: Oh geesh, I better think fast, and why am I getting this question any way? I thought my husband covered all this with him, you would have thought this would have entered the conversation. How can I answer this without saying the name of any body parts?

Me: Ummm, ummm, it's what the male ummm donates to ummm fertilize the egg.

Me thinking: I hope that satisfies him, please no follow up questions.

Long pause.

Son: And they named a whale after that???

Laughter, and the moment passes.

Exercise for comments

We have a new Exerciser for Comments! Bluepaintred has posted her pledge on her blog.

I have heard a lot of people doing the running/walking on a treadmill for comments, so for each comment I get I will DDR for 3 minutes. I'm not gonna set an "up to sixty minutes" limit thingy. I might not be able to do it all in one session but I *will* do it! Plus I'm a comment whore. Make people come comment. Use a gun if needed. Or chocolate. No wait. No chocolate, they might share!

How much blogging is too much blogging?

Is there a magic number? Like four, four hours a day is too much blogging?

Who makes up the rules about how much time should be allocated to different activities? Who named them Grand Poobah of the Blogosphere?

Is too much blogging too much of a good thing, or is it too much of a negative thing? What would make blogging inherently good, or inherently bad?

Is 5 minutes too much blogging? How about an hour? Is the time different for everyone? What is the hierarchy of time consumption that must be followed? Health and family first? What about distant family?

Is watching too much TV better or worse than too much blogging? What if you are engaged in educational blogging?

Is blogging better or worse than just surfing the Internet without engaging in blogging?

What is blogging's place in our lives?

So many questions, any answers out there?

In lieu of the Photo Hunt you get this...

The Solo Fest My son performed a saxophone solo at a solo fest today. I hope he did well. We took him out to a new restaurant afterwards, the Beale Street Cafe. The restaurant's logo is a sax player, so it seemed apropos.

New York City Here We Come We spent some time planning a trip to New York City during the April school break. My husband and I have been there, but my son has not and is very eager to go. We want him to see Yankee Stadium before the Yankees move. We are also going to take a tour of monument park at the stadium. Still can't believe they are moving.

PSH? My camera must have been left on because the battery was completely dead. I couldn't take the picture for the Photo Hunt. Perhaps I can post it tomorrow, after everyone has already done their photo hunt rounds. It involved my son guest blogging, so I hope we find time.

The weather is brutal here. The weather-people say it feels like -4 degrees F. I hope the birds are doing okay in this extreme cold.

If you could take lessons to learn any musical instrument, which would you want to learn? A harp, it sounds so beautiful, plus people look so elegant playing it. Not only that. it would make a nice focal point for a room.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how well do you keep secrets? I keep secrets very, very well.  If I promise not to say anything about it to anyone, I won't, guaranteed.

  Main Course
What's the closest you've ever been to a dangerous animal? I once held this gargantuan snake around my neck.  There's a reptile guy who does children's birthday parties, somehow, after everyone else did it, I ended up with it too.  I cheated a little, I made my husband stand next to me. When the reptile guy draped it over our shoulders, my husband had the part with the head near him, I got the end with the tail.  Alright, this is creeping me out, next topic.

Dessert
When was the last time you lost your patience? Today! Someone in my household puts sharp kitchen knives in the dish drainer to dry with the other dishes. I believe that knives should be promptly dried and put away in a knifeblock or some other knife protective thing. I have asked this person repeatedly to please put the knives away after washing them, don't leave them anywhere. I might as well be talking to myself. Do you put your knives in the dish drainer?

I'm Spoiled, Indulge Me

Writer's Digest Forum 10/24/2006: You’re a celebrity and are able to make demands on what must be provided in your dressing room (Jennifer Lopez insists on white couches). What are your top five demands and why?

Now, if you want me to show up at your venue there are a few things that are absolutely necessary to have in my dressing room.  Listen up, because I don't want to repeat myself, capiche? 

1) I need a personal computer, Windows based, don't be leaving a Mac. It should have the latest version of Microsoft Office and an internet connection, a very fast internet connection.  It should be a wireless notebook, don't forget the large size monitor and docking station. I don't want to squint. Make sure it's already booted up when I arrive.  I do need to stay in touch with my blogfriends.

2) I need a case of Coke Classic in bottles.  The eight ounce size in the classic bottle.  I'm not talking plastic, glass baby.  Cold, ice cold.  I need the caffeine to stay "up".  

3) Slippers and socks.  My feet get cold, then I'm uncomfortable and then I get grumpy.  A grumpy face gives me wrinkles.  I do not want wrinkles.  

4) Chamomile tea, hot, with sugar, at my disposal.  This tea helps me to relax. 

5) A large screen, flat panel TV, with a couple of extra remotes.  It should have a fully loaded cable package and Tivo.  I don't want to miss any of my shows. 

I'm sure it's understood that my dressing room should be tastefully decorated and very comfortable.  That's it!

Where's My Book?

So I spend time blogging and reading everyone's blogs, like most bloggers do. It seems that a lot of bloggers are aspiring writers They have ambitions to be published, they are working on their books. Some people believe that most people have a book inside them, just waiting to be written. Well I don't have a book in me. 

I've never thought that anything I'm thinking needs to be a book.  I've never even contemplated writing one. The mere thought of writing a book feels like a humongous project full of boring details.  You would have to pay me to write a book, and I don't see that happening. 

I love reading books and admire the craftsmanship involved. I've belonged to book clubs and thoroughly enjoy discussing each part of a book.

So why does everyone else have a book in them, and I don't? What is it that compels you to want to author a book? What am I missing?

Sunday Mornings

Here's a picture of how I like to spend Sunday mornings. I like to have a nice hot cup of coffee while I sit in the family room and look out the window. The window that's pictured in the far left of the bottom photo has a bird feeder just outside the window. I love to watch the birds at the feeder. I just put this feeder out this fall and it has attracted ten birds, four tufted titmice, four chickadees and two nut hatches. The top photo has a picture of one of the titmice that visited today. If I have time to do this on Sunday morning it brightens my entire day.

Photo Hunt #41 Wild

Here's the jack pine tree I was telling you about the other day. The wild weather has taken a toll on this tree.  The weight of the ice from the ice storm and the subsequent snow has bent the tree completely over.  There is no sign of a thaw in sight either.  I hope the tree will right itself when we get milder weather.  If it survives I might have to stake it, even though the tree is fifteen to twenty feet tall.

A town with no birds

What is happening to the birds in Australia?

Something very curious started happening in a coastal Australian town called Esperance, birds began falling dead from the sky in early December 2006.  By January 9th Esperance residents reported five thousand dead birds. So many birds were dead that Esperance was declared a natural disaster zone.  The dying didn't stop until there were no more birds left to die. 

 

The birds were dying around water sources, where they flew to quench an insatiable thirst.   Investigators found that the dead birds had empty stomachs.  People witnessed birds convulsing before they finally succumbed to their death.  What was causing this?

Investigators raced to find the cause.  First they ruled out infectious disease and bacterial infection, and they turned their attention to toxins, and the nearby swamp.  People began to speculate that perhaps the birds were deliberately poisoned , or maybe a dry winter was the cause.   Most of the dead birds were insect and nectar eaters.  The birds internal organs were decaying quickly after death, authorities needed freshly dead birds to autopsy. The problem was that there were no birds left.   Finally a wattle-bird, in the throes of death was handed over to authorities, they would be able to freeze the remains and preserve the bird for autopsy.

Authorities believe the most likely cause is toxic poisoning.  The question remains, what toxin? Pesticides? Authorities are awaiting the autopsy results.

Two hundred dead swallows were found in Narembeen, 380 kilometers from Esperance.

 

news.com.au - Jan 17

The birds in Narembeen were determined to be treemartins, similar to swallows.  The birds actually died two weeks ago, making it difficult for authorities to determine what caused their deaths.   Test results on the Esperance birds are due back early next week.

Jack Pine

The ice storm is wreaking havoc with a Jack Pine in our backyard. The tree is laying horizontally instead of standing vertically. The weight of the ice, plus the additional snow from was just to much for it to bear. It was so cold outside today, it was 16 degrees F when I got home from work. I went outside in the dark to see if I could help the tree, I brought a rubber mallet with me too see if I could tap some of the ice off. I couldn't get anything off but the snow. The tree was completely engulfed in ice, every last needle was ice covered, the bark was ice covered, and with the low temperatures nothing is melting. The trunk has not broken, Jack Pines have soft wood. I'm hoping that it will right itself after a thaw. Here's a picture.

With everything frozen I'm wondering how the birds are faring. They are eating the seed I put out for them, so I know at least some have survived. I have a heated birdbath because birds can't drink ice, nor can the other animals. I am hoping that some have found refuge in the winter roosting house I put out there for them. It should stay warm enough in there if they huddle together. The hole was cut low so when the heat rises it does not escape out of the house.

Please, if you have bad weather in your area, put out some food, water and shelter if possible for the birds and other wildlife.

Monday Memories

I just listened to the weather report. It looks like we will have an ice storm here tomorrow morning. I remember when we had an ice storm here in 1992. Everything was covered with ice, most people lost their electricity for several days, and it was cold outside. Some people had generators and could heat their home. My husband and I used a kerosene heater, we blocked off our family room and kitchen from the rest of the house by putting sheets and blankets over the entry ways. We did this to keep the heat in. We used a camp stove to cook, a gas lantern for light. My husband slept on the couch, I slept on the love seat. We went to work each day, where they had electricity. The only electronic entertainment we had was a radio with batteries. Conversation was the main source of entertainment. Our electricity came back on after five days.

If you don't see me around for a few days, you'll know why!

Update: The temperature stayed a few degrees above freezing most of the day. A small percentage of people lost power, we did not. Thanks for asking after me!

What comes to mind when you see the color orange? My son! His favorite color is orange. It's been his favorite color since he was 18 months old and he could identify the color. He frequently wears orange and has orange things. I painted his room orange. This is an easy question for me.

Did you ever get in trouble while you were in school? If so, what was it for? I very rarely got in trouble at school. In second grade the teacher asked us all to be quiet, I finished the last two words of my sentence and got in trouble because I didn't comply instantly. In eleventh grade the school started to crack down on kids who were skipping school. If you came in late for any reason you got detention. I was sick one day, but started feeling better. I had a history test eigth period and decided to go to school to take it. I took the test and got detention. Those were the only two times I got in trouble.

Which topping(s) make up your perfect pizza? Cheese with black olives.
Main Course
Do you believe in UFOs/aliens/etc.? Why or why not? I'm agnostic on this question. I don't rule out the possibility, but I've never seen any evidence of any. I haven't really searched for any evidence either. I guess I just don't care.
Dessert
What color is your bedspread/comforter/quilt? Blue with yellow flowers, some green mixed in, and some peach too. It's beautiful.

Am I an Embarrassment to Nature??

I ask this because I think my eleven year son thinks I am.  Whenever we are out somewhere I get this frantic whisper in my ear,  "Mom, we're in PUBLIC!!! Since this isn't news to me I reply, "So?"

This conversation usually follows after I decide to start humming, singing, or even skipping to songs, like We're Off to See the Wizard.  I was eleven once, so I understand that strict conformity to societal rules are important to eleven year olds.  However, I usually use these moments as teachable moments for my son. 

I tell him that I am free, and that he isn't going to be free until he does whatever he wants without caring about what other people think of him.  I don't advocate discourteous or illegal behavior, I just want him to loosen up a little. 

It's a hard lesson, one that I didn't learn until I was in my thirties.  I don't want my son's life constrained like mine was.  I used to care about what strangers thought of me, people I would probably never again see in my life.  I would say to myself, "I can't do that, what would people think?". 

Now I say to myself, "So what if I'm an awful singer, I love to sing, and there's a song in my heart right now."  Then I break out into song: Oh Ma-andy, well you came and you gave without ta-aking, and I sent you awa-ay oh Ma-andy. You know what, I'm going to sing if I want to, right there in public, for all to see, because I'm free.  I can sing if I want to.

I'm hoping for a duet some day.

I'm using Windows Live Writer to blog this

I'm trying something new, I'm using a Microsoft product to write this post.  I've never really been happy with the blogger interface, I hope I like this better.  I read about this at Blog tips at Blog Bullet, here's the link to the article: Windows Live Writer, Blogging Just Got Easier.

This seems fairly intuitive so far, it feels like a light version of Microsoft word. 

I had to make some make some adjustments to the directions to get it to work with Blogger Beta.  I found a work around at:  Getting Windows Live Writer to Work with Blogger Beta.

Memory

The one on the left, that's me. The other girls are my four sisters. This picture was taken in the back room of grocery store a couple miles from home. I chose this for the memory theme because when I close my eyes and reminisce about my childhood, I am eleven years old, just like in this picture. My sisters look just like this in my mind's eye even when I think of them today. Once I turned twelve I was busy expanding my horizons, so this was me, with my sisters, at the end of my childhood.
